Buhaya is an area in northwestern Tanzania with its own country and its own language. In Buhaya x 2 Gunnar describes his and his wife Imsa's life in Buhaya, a wonderful country with tropical vegetation on the western shore of Lake Victoria, which the Bahaya themselves call Lweru, "the Shining One". At the beginning the couple were often confused in their encounters with an unfamiliar African culture and made many mistakes. The Bahaya were very patient, however, and Imsa and Gunnar soon realized that they would be helpless without their assistance. They met many great personalities among the Bahaya, and this book portrays a number of Africans with great charisma. During his time as a missionary at Kigarama in northern Buhaya between 1953 and 1956, Gunnar painted a picture of its vicar, Paulo Kanywa, against the background of the then Kigarama Church. Gunnar describes him as "a man with commanding presence and of great integrity". The picture, here reproduced on the back cover, was painted while Gunnar was on sick leave due to malaria.
