Gender mainstreaming in public sector organisations : policy implications and practical applications

In Sweden, public sector organisations are legally required to promote gender equality. In 1994 gender mainstreaming was endorsed as the official way to achieve this objective. But what are fruitful strategies for sustainable development work – and how might these be implemented?

The main focus of this book is on different dilemmas in gender equality work. This relates both to how work on gender equality can be organised and what it might contain, e.g. the impact of gender-training and different ways of dealing with resistance. The book is based on extensive work with gender mainstreaming in the public sector – including schools, the social services, the rescue services and health care.
