This volume presents seven series by the pioneering artist Hilma af Klint, previously unpublished in their entirety. These works were all created in the first half of the year1920 and are the last paintings af Klint made before turning to water colour and adopting a recognisable a style of painting taught by Rudolf Steiner and his disciples.
All through her life, af Klint kept her non-representational images hidden. In 2013, the largest to date retrospective exhibition Hilma af Klint: A Pioneer of Abstraction was made by Moderna Museet in Stockholm. It turned out to be one of the most influential and successful exhibitions in the history of the museum and raised unparalleled awareness and understanding of this extraordinary artist, as well as a re-evaluation of the canon of the history of modern art itself.
In collaboration with Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Hamburger Bahnhof Museum für Gegenwart, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Henie Onstad Kunstsenter and The Serpentine Galleries in London the Ax:son Johnson Foundation has arranged international seminars to encourage scholarship about Hilma af Klint and put her pioneering work in a historical context.
Alongside these inspiring images, introduced by Daniel Birnbaum, this volume contains art historical essays by Briony Fer, David Lomas and Braden W. Joseph based on their lecturers given at an Ax:son Johnson seminar in conjunction with the exhibition Hilma af Klint: Painting the Unseen at the Serpentine Galleries in the spring of 2016 along with an introduction by Hans Ulrich Obrist.
